| Development,
Promulgation and Implementation of Standards |
The
Bureau of Standards is a statutory body established by the
Standards Act of 1968. Its
main functions are formulating, promoting and implementing
standards for goods, services and processes. The Bureau develops
and enforces technical regulations for those commodities and
practices which affect health and safety.
The
Standards Development and Certification Division
facilitates trade and protects Jamaican consumers by
the timely development and promulgation of national standards.
The Standards and Certification department facilitates industry's
participation to allow the development of new standards and
new markets both locally and regionally.
The Executive Director, along with a team of competent
managers, directs the activities of the organization.

and Technical Information |
Standards
could be described as documents stating the technical information
necessary for achieving reasonable safety, quality and efficiency
of products, processes and procedures.
The
Information Division promotes the understanding and consistent
application of standards and metrology through a process of
information sharing, public education programmes and the transfer
of standards technology.
The Artnel S. Henry Standards and Technical Information
Centre (TIC) provides standards and technical information
service which supports the standards development and
regulatory activities of the Bureau and other national
information needs for standardization.
The TIC is the only national standards body library in the
country and is the centre of the international standards information
network serving as;

| Training
(Standards Technology Transfer) |
The
Bureau is regarded as a leader in the region due to the positive
impact of it's training programme both locally and regionally.
Through the Bureau's Technology transfer thrust, the latest
information and methodologies in standardization are transferred
to persons in industry.
Courses,
Seminars and Workshops are designed around common needs of
various groups within the private and public sectors. In-plant
training packages are structured to suit specific needs of
manufacturers and processors. Individual Training Attachment
is conducted on request for technicians, specialists and administrators.
Leaders in standards institutions throughout the Caribbean
region benefit from this programme.
The
Bureau's laboratories offer technical advice, testing and
analytical services in the field of Chemistry, Microbiology,
Electrical / Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Building
and Non-Metallics . The Electrical Department is authorized
to carry out testing on behalf of the Underwriters Laboratory
(UL).
The
Pesticides Control Authoritys Registration System utilizes
the services of the Chemistry Laboratory for the analyses
of Pesticides formulations.
Our
services can assist manufacturers to improve product quality,
develop new products, assess finished goods, processes and
raw materials.
The
calibration services of the Bureau help users of measuring
instruments and standards to achieve the highest possible
levels of measurement quality and to conform to quality system
requirements.
Through its state-of-the-art calibration equipment, stable
laboratory environment and well-trained staff, the metrology
laboratories are able to offer calibration services with international
traceability and extremely
high levels of accuracy.
Our
Legal Metrology Programme provides
for the calibration of all instruments and equipment used
in trade as is required under the Weights and Measures Act,
1978.
| Inspection
and Monitoring |
The
Standards Compliance Inspectorate verifies
the implementation of Standards and technical regulations
to ensure that all locally made and imported products sold
in Jamaica conform to acceptable standards.
Officers of the Bureau are trained to conduct routine inspections
in factories, at the ports of entry, warehouses as well as
retail and wholesale operations in the marketplace.
Goods
and processes are examined for conformity to The
Processed Food Act, The
Standards Act and The
Weight and Measures Act. **
| Product
and Plant Certification |
This
is a specially designed programme aimed at improving product
quality and marketability.
The
department assists manufacturers to obtain Marks of Quality
or Conformity Marks which are awarded
to products, processes and practices which conform to relevant
standards. The Bureau's team of analysts examines the manufacturers
processes equipment, records, raw materials, quality control
systems and the finished product to ensure consistent adherence
to standards.
