Development, Promulgation and Implementation of Standards

The Bureau of Standards is a statutory body established by the Standards Act of 1968. Its
main functions are formulating, promoting and implementing standards for goods, services and processes. The Bureau develops and enforces technical regulations for those commodities and practices which affect health and safety.

The Standards Development and Certification Division facilitates trade and protects Jamaican consumers by the timely development and promulgation of national standards. The Standards and Certification department facilitates industry's participation to allow the development of new standards and new markets both locally and regionally.

The Executive Director, along with a team of competent managers, directs the activities of the organization.

Standards and Technical Information

Standards could be described as documents stating the technical information necessary for achieving reasonable safety, quality and efficiency of products, processes and procedures.

The Information Division promotes the understanding and consistent application of standards and metrology through a process of information sharing, public education programmes and the transfer of standards technology.

The Artnel S. Henry Standards and Technical Information Centre (TIC) provides standards and technical information service which supports the standards development and regulatory activities of the Bureau and other national information needs for standardization.
The TIC is the only national standards body library in the country and is the centre of the international standards information network serving as;

Codex Alimentarius Commission contact point for Jamaica
Local agent for major standards organization (ISO), British Standards Organization (BSI) and American Standards Institution (ANSI).

Training (Standards Technology Transfer)

The Bureau is regarded as a leader in the region due to the positive impact of it's training programme both locally and regionally. Through the Bureau's Technology transfer thrust, the latest information and methodologies in standardization are transferred to persons in industry.
