Post Title: Cost Accountant

Summary of Position:

The Cost Accountant is responsible for collecting, validating and communicating data for the purposes of financial and process improvements. This involves ongoing analysis of process constraints, tracing, investigating and analyzing costs and making recommendations for new cost-efficient and financially feasible cost options with a view to achieving economy, efficiency and effectiveness.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and maintain a cost accounting system, documentation and records to determine the main cost drivers for the organization and make recommendations
  • Collect, compile and conduct analysis of all costs to determine potential savings, efficiencies or possible reconfiguration for decision-making purposes
  • Analyze any changes (or potential changes) in the internal and external environment affecting goods and services provided in order to determine the effect on cost
  • Periodic review in conjunction with the Manager Communications & Customer Service Branch to ensure that prices are consistent with market conditions to ensure contribution to profit
  • Monitor all input costs and report on trends
  • Provide management with reports that specify and compare factors that affect the prices and profitability of goods and services
  • Assist in developing and documenting policies and procedures, including system requirements and internal controls

Minimum Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance, ACCA Level II or equivalent
  • Intermediate or advanced literacy or certification in Microsoft Office Suite, in particular Excel (familiarity with VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables)

Experience:

  • Three (3) years at a supervisory level in an accounting environment
  • 2 – 3 years in a similar capacity would be an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of PBMA and the FAA Act
  • Working knowledge of Government Procurement Policy and other regulations
  • Good customer service skills
  • Good leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Keen eye for details
