The Electrical and Electronics Branch encompasses two areas of focus: Metrology (Measurement Science) and Testing. The Branch is a key player in ensuring that Jamaica’s electrical landscape meets national, regional, and international standards. We safeguard consumer interests, support industrial innovation, and facilitate fair trade through its comprehensive range of services.

The Branch also facilitates the development and review of standards by participating in the work of national, regional and international Technical Committees. Metrology services are offered to assess the accuracy of measuring instruments and provide measurement traceability for Jamaica’s measurement system to the International System of Units (SI). Testing services are provided for electrical products such as circuit breakers, meter sockets, cables, panel boards, light bulbs, etc. Testing is also provided for appliances like televisions, VCR, microwave and fans.

Our Specialised Units

The Electrical & Electronics Branch is composed of eight (8) units, split evenly between our metrology (measurement science) services and our product testing and assessment services:

Metrology Units (Ensuring Measurement Accuracy)

  1. Temperature Metrology Unit (TMU)
  2. Energy Metrology Unit (EMU)
  3. AC/DC Metrology Unit (AMU) (Our electrical measurements lab)
  4. Time & Frequency Metrology Unit (TFMU)

Testing & Conformity Assessment Units (Ensuring Product Safety & Compliance)

  1. Appliance & Gadgets Testing Unit (AGTU)
  2. Intermediary Electrical Products Testing Unit (IEPTU)
  3. Power Supply Products Testing Unit (PSPTU)
  4. Energy Efficiency Testing Unit (EETU) The Laboratory is accredited by JANAAC according to ISO/IEC 17025, with the accreditation valid only for the scope listed in the annex of the accreditation certificate.

Services offered by units

Here is a detailed look at the services you can expect from each of our units:

Unit Name

Services Provided

Temperature Metrology Unit (TMU)

Provides temperature calibrations and other temperature metrology services for a variety of instruments, crucial for industries such as healthcare, food production, and logistics. This unit also offers pH meter calibration services.

Energy Metrology Unit (EMU)

Focuses on services related to energy and power measurement. Its most frequent service is the accuracy verification and type approval of electricity meters in accordance with relevant national standards and protocols, ensuring fair and accurate utility billing across Jamaica.

AC/DC Metrology Unit (AMU)

The equivalent of an Electrical Metrology Lab elsewhere in the world. The AMU provides high-accuracy calibration and verification services for instruments that measure fundamental electrical quantities (e.g., voltage, current & resistance)

Time & Frequency Metrology Unit (TFMU)

The unit contribute to the World Standard Time (Coordinated Universal Time) UTC and is recognized by the BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures)

Unit Name

Services Provided

Appliance & Gadgets Testing Unit (AGTU)

Provides comprehensive testing, inspections, and label assessments of household appliances and other gadgets. Conformity assessment is a primary service offered. The AGTU has the widest scope of products to assess against one of the largest lists of standards, covering everything from lighting products (e.g. Bulbs) to motor-operated products (e.g. fans) to heating products (e.g. electric stoves) to multimedia products (e.g. smart TVs).

Intermediary Electrical Products Testing Unit (IEPTU)

Provides testing, inspections, and label assessments for electrical products / components that act as interconnections (partially/fully) between a power supply source and ultimately a product that provides a final desired outcome to a user. Conformity assessment is a main category of service. This unit also has a vast scope of products to assess and a large list of standards. Examples of assessed products include: cables, switches, sockets, breaker panels, extension cords, surge protectors and fridge guards.

Power Supply Products Testing Unit (PSPTU)

Focuses on products that act as a source of electrical power supply. Services include testing, inspections, and label assessments. Conformity assessment is a main service area. Scope of products: electric generators, electric inverters, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and various types of batteries.

Energy Efficiency Testing Unit (EETU)

Provides testing, volumetric assessment/verification, and energy label assessments of specific refrigerating appliances (Refrigerators, Freezers, Air Conditioners, Refrigerator-Freezers, and Wine Chillers).
