Metrologist, Metallurgy (Temporary)

Job Summary

The Metrologist, Metallurgy, is responsible for the maintenance and further development of the Metallurgy Laboratory to provide testing of metallic materials including reinforcing steel bars and LPG cylinders, and to conduct failure analysis.

Core Functions:

  • Perform calibration /testing activities on samples in the laboratory and on site

  • Monitors the tests conducted by the Technicians

  • Prepares and signs test reports for issuance to customers

  • Participates in the development of local, regional and international standards

  • Participates in audits of firms covered by the National Certification Mark Programme and the LPG Authorization Programme

  • Participates in the development and delivery of training seminars and workshops facilitated by the organization

  • Guides the development and implementation of projects

  • Modifies test apparatus as necessary to conduct tests and calibrations

  • Prepares relevant documents for submission to the Procurement Committee for purchasing/sourcing of goods and services

  • Validates non-standard methods used by the Mechanical & Metrology Branch

  • Conducts research in standards calibration and testing

  • Prepare documents and execute other required activities to maintain the laboratory’s Quality Management Systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Working knowledge of the Standards & Weights and Measures Acts

  • Highly developed critical thinking, problem solving, analytical and decision making skills

  • Highly developed competencies in system analysis

  • Working knowledge of material testing would be an asset.

  • Working knowledge of various standards including but not limited to ISO 17025, 9001, 14001 and 50001

  • Working knowledge of Government of Jamaica Procurement Procedures

  • Very good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

  • Strong project and task management skills

  • Work well in teams as well as with minimal supervision

Minimum Qualification and Experience:

Technician, Mechanical & Metrology Branch

 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science

  • Two (2) years experience working in a laboratory or production position, preferably in an ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 17025 accredited entity

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite

Job Summary

The Technician conducts routine tests and calibrations, maintenance of physical standards, equipment repair and maintenance of the overall operation of the Mechanical & Metrology Branch to achieve the Division’s objectives.

Core Functions:

  • Prepares test items and make the necessary preparation in accordance with the procedures and work instructions for the assigned laboratories.

  • Conducts routine tests and /or calibrations according to standard methods and established procedures.

  • Performs and records routine maintenance on calibration and testing equipment according to schedule.

  • Drafts reports for examination by supervisors

  • Assists in development of projects for the laboratories, including the fabrication of rigs to facilitate tests and calibrations.

  • Performs duties within the requirements of the Quality Management Systems

  • Cross checking of test and calibration results.

  • General maintenance of the laboratories’ physical standards and equipment repair

  • Laboratory Quality Assurance activities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Working knowledge of the Standards and Weights and Measures Act

  • Working knowledge of calibration systems, practices and procedures

  • Working knowledge of maintenance systems, practices and procedures

  • Working knowledge of technical report writing

  • Working knowledge of quality management systems

  • Ability to meet stipulated deadlines

  • Ability to multi-task

  • Ability to demonstrate initiative

  • Excellent trouble-shooting skills

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Good customer service attitude\

  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity

Minimum Qualification and Experience:

Metrologist, Mass Metrology

 

  • Diploma in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering from a recognized tertiary institution or Associate Degree in Engineering or relevant discipline

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite

  • One (1) year related experience in a laboratory environment

Job Summary

The Metrologist is responsible for day to day management of a calibration laboratory, working within the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and other ISO Standards relating to accreditation or Peer review.

Core Functions:

  • Conduct activities relating to the maintenance of a National Standard

  • Performs testing and/or metrology activities on samples

  • Monitors the testing and metrology activities of the technicians

  • Prepares and signs test and/or calibration reports for issuance to customers

  • Participates in the development of local, regional and international standards

  • Participates in the enforcement of compulsory standards and regulations under the Standards and Weight and Measures Acts

  • Conducts audits of firms covered by the National Certification Mark Programme and the LPG Authorization Programme

  • Conduct inspections and sampling at ports of entry under the Standards Compliance Programme

  • Participates in the development and delivery of training seminars and workshops facilitated by the organization

  • Guides the development and implementation of projects

  • Modifies test apparatus as necessary to conduct tests and calibrations

  • Prepares relevant documents for submission to the Procurement Committee for purchasing/sourcing of goods and services

  • Validates non-standard methods used by the department

  • Conducts research in standards calibration and testing

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Knowledge of metrology including measurement uncertainty

  • Sound knowledge of equipment calibration and testing

  • Knowledge of the Standards Act 1969, the Weights and Measures Act 1976, and the Processed Foods Act 1959

  • Knowledge of Project Development and Management

  • Working knowledge of  quality management systems

  • Ability to prepare and interpret technical reports

 

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Very good customer service attitude

  • B.Sc. or B.Eng. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

  • Distinction in Mathematics & Physics at O’ level/CSEC/A’ level/CAPE or ‘A’ at the tertiary level

  • Two (2) years experience working in a laboratory or production position, preferably ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 17025 accredited
