Employment Opportunity - Analyst (Chemistry Department)

Job Summary:

The Analyst, Chemistry Department conducts analytical testing on various samples, and research new and improved methods of analysis. The incumbent maintains detailed records and files both as hard and electronic copy. Additionally the Analyst contributes to the writing of standards and auditing activities.

Core Functions:

  • Conducts chemical analysis on various types of samples submitted to the laboratory
  • Researches new test methods to improve analytical capacity and satisfy emerging demand
  • Performs calibration of instruments both internal and external to the BSJ
  • Prepares quotations, test and calibration reports, internal bill, job costing and any other relevant documents Provides guidance and supervision to Technician  Performs routine maintenance and checks on Laboratory equipment
  • Maintains laboratory notes, departmental records and files (both hard and electronic copy) in an orderly manner for easy retrieval
  • Contributes to the implementation of the quality system and conform to any relevant procedures which have been adopted
  • Participates in regular proficiency testing and inter-comparisons 
  • Represents BSJ at local and international fora
  • Represents the department on technical and non-technical committees

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of General Chemistry, Scientific Research and Chemical Analysis techniques Conversant with good laboratory safety principles
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Quality System Procedures
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and pay attention to detail.

Minimum Qualification and Experience:

  • B.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Food Chemistry with sufficient analytical bias
  • Working knowledge of Food Processing, Standards, and Weights & Measures Acts
  • Ability to use basic computer software and applications
  • At least two (2) years experience in an analytical laboratory
  • Specialized training in principles of laboratory quality systems – ISO 17025
  • Conversant with Microsoft Office software
