The Bureau of Standards Jamaica invites applications for the post of: 

Standards Development Officer

Job Summary

In reporting to the Manager, Standards Development, the incumbent will undertake standards development and conformity assessment initiatives in keeping with the Division’s mandate.

Core Functions:

  • Coordinates and performs standards development and promulgation activities as assigned.

  • Participates in and provides support for commemoration activities, e.g. World Standards Day.

  • Conducts academic research to inform the standards development process

  • Prepares reports on activities in accordance with established guidelines or as required.

  • Serves as national coordinator or focal point representative for international and regional standards development activities.

  • Participates in the marketing, education and public relations activities of the BSJ.

  • Plans and implements activities for the National Quality Awards Programme as assigned.

  • Provides technical support to stakeholders as required.

  • Prepares notification on standards, technical regulations and conformity assessment as required.

  • Participates in training and other knowledge transfer activities.

  • Prepares and delivers presentations at internal and external fora.

  • Participates in the implementation and maintenance of the organization’s Quality and Environmental Management System (QEMS), e.g. implementation of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

  • Represents the BSJ and/or Jamaica at various national, regional and international fora.

​Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of food processing techniques

  • Comprehensive knowledge of quality management systems such ISO 9001

  • Working knowledge of the auditing of quality management systems

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

  • Strong research and report writing skills

  • Work with minimal supervision

  • Excellent planning, coordinating and organizing skills

  • Working knowledge of Public Relations, Marketing and Sales

  • Working knowledge of Data Management Systems

  • Excellent customer service attitude

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Excellent meeting management, mediation and negotiation skills

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Good critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills

​Minimum Qualification and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in the Natural Sciences or in a related discipline from an accredited institution

  • Training in auditing Food Safety and Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001, ISO 22000, etc.) would be an asset

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Two (2) years work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Natural Sciences OR

  • Four (4) years work experience in a scientific organization with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline.
